Stalking into the bedroom, I snatch up my things and command my feet to carry me away from this suite and out of Devlin Stone’s life. I’m such a fool. Ever since he took me in his arms on the dance floor, I imagined a very different end to the evening. My body is throbbing with need. Every time he slid his hand to the small of my back or let his gaze linger on my lips, I grew more determined to come back to this suite and tumble into his bed.
Damn it.
I slip back into the living room in time to see Devlin disappear into the dark bedroom. A light snaps on, its soft glow spilling over the threshold like a golden invitation. Longing pulses in me, compelling and insistent. I stare at the doorway to his bedroom, wishing he’d come back but praying he won’t.
Why had he looked so conflicted when he told me he no longer needed my help?
I rub my forehead. My thoughts are a jumbled mess. I wish I’d never read his mother’s letters. They’d been filled with news of how she and Devlin were doing in Chicago and brought back memories of the teenage boy who’d picked flowers for his mother and was chosen “biggest crush” in the junior class poll. I’d started to imagine that somewhere beneath his sex-god body, bluntness, and grim emotions the fun-loving charmer still lurked.
Crazy, right?
I always did have a thing for the bad boys.
I cross the suite to the bedroom door. “Devlin.”
At my voice, he stiffens. After a long, silent minute, he turns his head and regards me from beneath the shaggy fringe of his bangs. I hesitate as I’m struck by his sexy, merciless glare. He unfastens his black bowtie and the top button of his shirt, then unbuttons his cuffs and rolls up his sleeves.
“Did you mean it?” I begin. This is not going to be easy. I seek answers in his face, but his expression is unreadable.
“Mean what?” he says.
I suck in a deep, nerve-calming breath before I can get the words out. “About us being done.”
“Yes.” He picks up his champagne flute and stares at the contents.
My thoughts flicker to Edward’s bombshell about Devlin’s father. How much of it was true? Had Vincent Stone stolen the money, or had someone forged his signature on the documents my father brought to light? Does Devlin have plans for my father? And had pursuing me played into that? What a fool I was to think I could convince him to leave the past alone. I can’t save my father. I can’t even save myself.
“Were you planning to use me against my father?”
Devlin drains the glass and sets it on the dresser. “The thought had crossed my mind.”
“So that’s the real reason you suggested we be seen together. Because you thought it would upset him.”
“Yes,” he says.
I’m neither surprised nor angry. “Is that all there is to it?”
“What other reason could there be?”
No reason except the promise of hours of wanton, ravaging, hungry sex.
